Global Art League 2025 | Musée et Centre d’art de Montréal Participant in the Global Art League / Participant.e à la Global Art League Art by / Œuvre de : Patricia Walton Title / Titre : A walk in the forest / Une marche dans le bois / Acrylic / 18 x 18 x 1 1/2

BIO

BIO
Born and raised in Scottish / Irish Ontario farming country, Walton’s work includes sculpture, painting and mixed media Walton studied Craft and Design (1974-76) in Brockville, Ontario under Katharine Ylitalo and Richard Gill, then, graduated in Textile Arts at Alberta College of Art (Calgary 1979) ), studying under Katharine Dickerson, Jane Kidd, Wendy Toogood, and Alexandra Haeseker. In 1981, she opened a textile arts studio in northern Saskatchewan producing large-scale woven tapestries based on observations of local Cree life. Employed as Animateur of Arts and Culture, Walton organized and taught community classes (drawing, painting, weaving, and dance); operated a community exhibition space; and directed the development of local art festivals and events. In 1983 she attended Emma Lake Art School studying under textile artist Ann Newdigate Mills. Walton received numerous accolades for her fibre works; the Prince Albert Winter Festival Prix d’excéllence in 1983; a provincial tour of her work hosted by the Organization of Saskatchewan Arts Councils in 1984; and a Saskatchewan Arts Board travel grant in 1985.

In 1987 Walton studied under artists George Glenn, David Alexander, and Greg Curnoe at the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts. In 1988, she received a Saskatchewan Arts Board Research and Creation grant, exhibiting the completed project at the Gordon Snelgrove Gallery in Saskatoon. Walton moved to Montréal in 1985, when a visual disability affected her ability to continue textile art. From this point, her practice shifted to painting and collage, sculpture, and ‘live painting’ performance. Walton continued her education at L’institute Simone de Beauvoir, Visual Arts Centre in Westmount (where she studied abstraction under Marie-Claude Bouthillier), and at l’École d’été Internationale de Percé (U. of Laval) under the tutelage of Alexandre David. Walton managed Modèle Vivant sessions, participated in, and organized Peinture en Direct in Montreal. In 2004-05 she became one of the founding members of Sauvons L’usine in the battle to save the Grover building, which housed studio spaces for over 300 artists, from being sold for condominium construction. From here, she became a founding member of the annual 4 day/ 3 building open studio event La virée des ateliers (2006 -2023). In 2014 -16, Walton was represented by Galerie Nuedge in Montreal, and in 2017 - 19, Walton’s work was then represented by Galerie Deux Poissons, Mtl. Walton continues to be represented by David Astrof Fine Arts (Mtl.) In 2017, Walton was awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Creative development grant, while in 2020, Walton received an Acquisition grant from CALQ. In 2024 Walton was granted project funding from Conseil des arts de Montréal, QC. and is currently (2025) working on a second project grant again funded courtesy Conseil des arts de Montréal, QC.
