Veronika Otcuoglu (elle), est une artiste visuelle basée à Montréal. Elle se spécialise en peinture et en dessin. Dans sa pratique, elle accorde une attention particulière à l'utilisation d’éléments culturels provenant de son pays natal, la Turquie, ainsi qu’à des éléments symboliques inspirés de ses origines : l’art, l’histoire, les motifs mythologiques et les enjeux politiques de ce pays. Son style artistique est majoritairement réaliste, mais elle aime mélanger les styles et différentes techniques artistiques, comme combiner des figures, objets et idées surréalistes avec des éléments réalistes. Elle travaille sur différents thèmes tels que la nostalgie, la culture, les paysages, les portraits et les compositions abstraites en lien avec la Turquie. Elle a effectué un apprentissage au Visual Arts Centre de Westmount avant de commencer ses études de premier cycle. Elle est récemment diplômée du programme prolongé du département de peinture et dessin de la Faculté des beaux-arts de l’Université Concordia.

Description de l’œuvre :

Equity est une peinture en techniques mixtes qui explore la nature complexe de la justice et son importance au sein de la société. Dans mon travail, en tant que personne arméno-grecque née en Turquie, j’ai voulu remettre en question le fait d’avoir vécu dans un pays où la justice fait défaut. Cette peinture représente Athéna, déesse de la sagesse, de la guerre, de l’artisanat, de la paix et, surtout, de la justice et de la victoire. Je ressens une profonde connexion avec l’archétype d’Athéna. Elle est aussi connue sous le nom de Niké, tout comme mon prénom, Veronika, qui signifie « porteuse de victoire ». L’œuvre mélange la douceur des coups de pinceau et les formes rectangulaires et carrées aux découpes nettes. Les collages achromatiques, représentant des parties de la statue d’Athéna et une chouette (symbole de sagesse), créent un contraste avec les couleurs dorées et chaudes. Les effets pixélisés produisent une image floue par endroits, ce qui fait référence aux faits historiques du passé encore flous ou non clarifiés. ______________________________________________

Veronika Otcuoglu (she/her), is a visual artist based in Montreal. She specializes in painting and drawing. In her practices, she pays attention to the use of cultural elements from her hometown Turkey and symbolic elements inspired by her origins; the art, the history, mythological motifs and the political issues of this country. Her art style is mostly realistic but she likes mixing the styles and different artistic techniques such as combining surrealistic figures, objects and ideas with realistic ones. She is working on different themes such as nostalgia, culture, landscapes, portraits, and abstract compositions relating to Turkey. She has done an apprenticeship in The Visual Arts Centre of Westmount before starting her undergraduate studies. She has recently graduated from the extended program of the Painting and Drawing Department at Concordia University’s Faculty of Fine Arts. Artwork description: Equity is a mixed-media painting that explores the complex nature of justice and its importance in a society. In my work, as an Armenian-Greek born in Turkey, I wanted to challenge the concept of having lived in a country where justice is lacking. This painting is a representation of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, war, handicrafts, peace and especially of justice and victory. I feel a deep connection to the Athena archetype. She is also known as Nike, as my name, Veronika, which means 'bringing victory.' The work blends the softness of the brush strokes and the sharp-cut rectangular and square forms. The achromatic collages, on which parts of Athena’s statue and owl (symbol of wisdom) are depicted, create a contrast with the gold, warm colours. The pixelated effects created turn it into a blurry image in some areas of the painting, which refers to the unclear historical facts of the past.
